A firefighter bailout system allows firefighters to escape a building quickly and safely when other methods of exit aren't possible. Firefighters should be trained to use bailout systems and practice them regularly to respond instinctively in an emergency. Some bailout systems come in a carrying pack that can be stored in the firefighter's turnout gear pants. Bailout systems typically include the following components: Hook: Anchors the system to a solid part of the building, like a window sill or pole Rope: A fire-rated rope or web that lowers the firefighter to safety Descender: A device that allows the firefighter to control their descent speed Harness: A full seat harness that provides support during descent Carabiner: Connects the harness to the rest of the system
